Getting Started

New to Scribe? This step-by-step guide walks you through recording, uploading, configuring, and reviewing your first TTRPG session using the Scribe app.

1: Create a Campaign

After creating your account, you’ll be prompted to create a campaign. Once the campaign is created, you’ll land on the Home Screen, where you can begin recording or uploading your first session.

During campaign creation, you can configure the following:

  • Campaign Name – The title of your campaign, shown throughout the app

  • Campaign Description (optional) – A short note about your world, setting, or playgroup

  • Default Image Generation Style – Choose your preferred visual style for AI-generated images

  • Default Session Summary Settings – Set preferences for tone, point of view, or detail level in summaries

All of these settings can be adjusted later from the Campaign Settings screen if needed. You're not locked in — feel free to experiment and update as your campaign evolves.

2: Record session audio

You can record your session using either a mobile device (for in-person games) or a desktop setup (for remote/online games). Scribe accepts all major audio file types.

For In-Person Games
  • Use your phone’s built-in audio recording app:

    • iOS: Voice Memos

    • Android: Sound Recorder

  • Place your device in the center of the table for the best audio capture. Record away!

For Remote or Online Games
  • Use a software, plugin or third-party tool to record your session locally on your computer (e.g., OBS, Zoom, Discord bots).

  • These tools often export large files so you may need to compress the audio before uploading (see below).

💡 Recording Tips

  • Ask multiple players to record for backup in case of error.

  • Use player character names frequently for better summaries.

  • Try to limit crosstalk and unrelated conversation during key scenes.

  • Do not start the session with a recap of the previous session — this can cause repeated or overlapping content in your summaries.

  • Instead, begin the recording with a short summary of the current party state and location.

Example: “After a long rest, you awaken at the edge of the ruined temple…”

3: Upload audio

Once you’ve recorded your audio, you’re ready to upload it to Scribe for processing. You can do this directly in the mobile app or from your desktop using the web uploader.

Upload in the App
  • Open the Scribe app on your mobile device

  • Tap New Session on the Home Screen

  • Select the audio file in your device files and upload

Upload via Web Uploader

If your audio file is on your computer or you want to upload multiple files at once, use our web uploader: app.tabletopscribe.com

  • Upload up to 5 audio files at a time

  • Uploaded files will be available in the mobile app under New Session, where you can configure and submit each one individually.

4: Configure session

After uploading your audio file, the next step is to configure how Scribe should process and present the session. This includes naming and dating the session, customizing the summary output, selecting linked lore entries, and confirming cost details.

Basic Info

  • Session Name

A clear title for the session, used for display and organization within your campaign.

Example: “The Siege of Dusk Hollow”

  • Session Date

Determines the chronological order of sessions in your campaign archive.

Configure the Summary Output

You have full control over how Scribe writes your summary and generates supporting content. Changes made to these settings for an individual session will not overwrite campaign default settings. There are three areas of customization:

1. Summary Direction (Optional)

Add an open-ended instruction to guide how Scribe summarizes your session. This is helpful if your session had unusual structure, important emotional beats, or multiple simultaneous plotlines.

Examples:

  • “Highlight the tension between Bron and Seraphine throughout the temple scenes.”

  • “Skip the downtime and focus on the infiltration of the wizard’s tower.”

  • “Balance the perspectives of both player groups — they split up early in the session.”

2. Generation Settings

Configure how the summary is written. These options allow you to shape the output to your group’s preferences:

  • Summary Length – Short, Standard, or Detailed

  • Writing Style – Choose from Narrative, Cinematic, Factual, or Whimsical

  • Tone – Lighthearted, Dramatic, Serious, or Neutral

  • Emphasis – Prioritize Action, Dialogue, Exploration, Roleplay, or Mystery

  • Include Quotes – Choose whether to include notable player or character lines

  • Include Game Mechanics – Include dice rolls, spells, class features, or ability names

These settings can be adjusted per session, even if campaign defaults are already set.

3. Image Generation Style

Choose from one of 12 visual styles for your AI-generated session image.

This image will visually represent the session's most memorable scene.

Campaign Lore Entries

Scribe builds and updates your Campaign Journal using three types of entries:

  • Adventurers – The player characters in your campaign

  • NPCs – Notable non-player characters who appeared in the session

  • Locations – Key places visited, discovered, or referenced

For each category, you can:

  • Select existing entries from your Campaign Journal

  • List new entries you'd like Scribe to write for this session.

💡 If you want Scribe to write entry descriptions, make sure to add them here before submitting a session.

Scribe will then:

  • Write or update the entry's description based on relevant session events

  • Highlight that entry's involvement in the current session

  • Automatically link the entry back to the session and vice versa for easy navigation

Generation Cost & Final Review

The total cost of your session is calculated based on:

  • Audio length – Measured in hours (1 credit = 1 hour)

  • Image generation settings – Higher quality images cost more credits.

Before submitting, be sure to:

  • Double-check your session name and date

  • Review all summary and image generation settings

  • Confirm your selected lore entries

  • Verify the calculated generation cost

If the session fails to process for any reason, your credits will be automatically refunded.

5: Submit session

Once you've configured your session and confirmed the generation cost, you're ready to submit it for processing.

Processing typically takes 5–10 minutes, depending on:

  • The length of the audio recording

  • The selected image generation quality

After submission, you can continue using the app. You’ll receive an in-app notification when your session is finished and ready for review.

Note: This is not a push notification — check the app manually if needed.

6: Review session output

Once processing is complete, your session will appear in Draft mode under your Campaign Journal.

From here, you can:

  • Read the session summary

  • Edit the text manually

  • Or use the Smart Rewrite feature to apply structured feedback or corrections

You can also view all linked Session Lore entries (NPCs, adventurers, locations), each automatically updated or created based on your session.

When you’re satisfied with the result, save the session to finalize it.
